Celebrating Total Defence Day 2020

Total Defence Day serves to remind us about the importance of being able to defend ourselves so that what happened on 15 February 1942, Singapore falling into the hands of the Japanese in World War II, will not be repeated. Among the six pillars of Total Defence, Civil Defence falls within the purview of BSE as it includes fire safety.

In keeping with the theme “Together We Keep Singapore Strong,” BSE would like to continue sharing practical ways that everyone can practise Total Defence in their daily lives.

At a fundamental level, 1) having access to and 2) knowing how to use a Portable Fire Extinguisher is a necessity. This is because when a fire breaks out and the spread is still containable, the immediate fire-fighting response equipment is the Portable Fire Extinguisher. Anyone can operate it—and everyone should know how to as it could save lives and properties.

It is always useful to note where the nearest Portable Fire Extinguisher is (they are often located within common areas of building facilities), and the P.A.S.S. rule when you need to use it:

  • Pull the pin at the top of the Fire Extinguisher

  • Aim the nozzle towards the base of the fire

  • Squeeze the handle to discharge

  • Sweep the nozzle from side to side

Let us not take our safety and well-being in Singapore for granted—the recent Novel Coronavirus outbreak has shown us that we can never be too prepared. Therefore, let us all play our part to the best of our abilities to ensure that our community can thrive amidst any emergency.
